This Week's Retro News - Worth-A-Watch issue 01

Worth a Watch issue 01, 22 September 2026: This week's retro news, hand curated down to the stories worth your time

In this issue: Amiga, MiSTer, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, C64, Dreamcast, Android, Apple II, Atari 2600, Atari 8-bit

The MiSTer community is not showing any signs of slowing down, and that is despite repeated warnings that developers are at the limits of what the FPGA hardware is capable of. It's a fascinating world of hardware recreated in hardware via software. Unlike pure software emulation, there is inevitably going to be an upper limit to what can be crammed into the resources, but those amazing smart folks keep getting the kit to do more and more!

Behind the scenes, this weekly (I hope) news update was always going to be a total experiment, so I was not surprised to see the results were ... strange!

Issue Zero had a low open rate compared to my usual percentage. Around half of you (give or take email tools, settings, etc) normally open Retro Game Coders emails, whereas the Worth a Watch email only got 36.49%, which is not terrible but a big drop from the average. Thankfully once opened the email and stories did do well for clicks.

What conclusions can I draw? None, too early, so PLEASE let me know what you think! and if you know someone who would like retro news piped to their inbox, share it with them :)

PS.

I made the editorial decision to exclude anything that I could find through research was 'vibe coded'. Agree or disagree on that?

I need to get more efficient with my note-taking and news-hunting! Big story this issue is something seemingly innocuous but it speaks to an ongoing discussion in the retro gaming community. If FPGA boards start running emulation on the microcontroller rather than hardware recreation in...

Secondary, but also big is what one person thinks of as 'news' is another person's junk or noise. How to keep up with the good stuff without drowning in the rest of it? So I thought, as a programmer, and a person with opinions, I would try and come up with my take on a solution. As was tradition back in the day, I...
